*Is sustainability the death of innovation? - Thursday 12 April 2007, The Watershed*
Continuing the theme from the hugely successful Christmas party of how we designers can mould our future, Katie Winterbourne of resourcefutures brought along an extensive list of practical suggestions for the design industry. These ranged from ideas on reducing waste and by-products in design practices to considering how staff travel to and from work and the impact of legislation.
Craig White of White Design, an architecture practice specialising in sustainable design, came back to develop his ‘Think Global, Act Local’ message of the Christmas party. Craig’s stimulating talk featured White Design’s revolutionary zero-carbon straw bale construction method. This has been successfully used to build student residences at the University of the West of England and, excitingly, in collaboration with young people in Knowle West, the development of the new Archmedia Media Centre. For more details on these projects, see the White Design website.
